Some highlights in the past month:
When putting on his shoes, Avery says that his shoes "eat" his socks.
We were reading a story and Avery pointed out a camel in a picture and said that it had "speed bumps".
Instead of saying something is "mine", he declares that it is "mee's".
While brushing his hair in the morning, Avery said that "I gonna comb my hairs real nice".
Avery has often escaped from the church nursery. Many times, he will thank the person who catches him afterward.
"Avery is a funny little guy" - says this after he makes a joke
Avery noticed a hook at the top/side area of the car while sitting in his carseat. I explained that it was a hook to hang things on, and demonstrated the explanation by hanging a blanket from it. Since then, everytime he sits in his carseat, he adamantly demands that we hang his "blanquet" up on the hook.
I was trying to put cash in the machine at Wal-Mart's self check out. The machine was not taking my bill and was spitting it out after several attempts of turning it in different directions. The cashier started laughing because Avery laughed at me each instance the machine spit my bill back out.
A blog for the purpose of recording precious memories of growing up and sharing life and laughs together.

Fingerprints
Fingerprints are something I've had to just let my type A personality accept. We have fingerprints and smudges about toddler height on our dishwasher, stove, windows, tables, etc... There are small dotted stains from a sippy cup sprinkled across our carpet. Toys and diapering/potty training stuff is scattered in most rooms of the house. Sometimes, the innocent lively chaos sends me into a cleaning frenzy. But, I hope that I am using this time to also accept and embrace my son's personality and developmental stage. This time will pass all too quickly and I will probably miss the tiny fingerprints on my sunglasses.

Sticky Notes
We run out of sticky notes pretty fast at our house. Recently, we've resorted to just cutting up scrap paper into little squares to help save a little money buying new stickies. A pad of sticky notes can be found in every room in the house as well as the glove compartments of both vehicles.
Why the obsession with sticky notes? It is because I can't remember all of the millions of little things that pop up during the day that I need to do unless I write them items down. Therefore, I try to quickly write things down and keep a pile of the used stickies to sift through later.
Many of the things I write down are funny sayings that Avery randomly comes up with. Below are some scenarios of funny or cute Avery anecdotes recorded in the past few weeks:
1.) Avery noticed my toenails were painted red. He laughed and called them "cherry toes".
2.) Our old, 1996 red Toyota Tercel needed an inspection. Avery went with Clint to take care of it. Clint explained to Avery that the car was sort of going to the doctor. Later, Avery told me that "Lightning McQueen" (our red car) went to the doctor because he had a boo boo. He got a band aid and now "is OK".
3.) One of Avery's BUM Kids teachers told me how much Avery seemed to love his raisins at snack time. This reminded me of his daddy. When Clint was little, he loved raisins too and would spend his allowance money buying them.
4.) We sometimes like to drive through the park because it is very scenic. There are speed bumps on the road to keep people from driving too fast. When Avery felt the car going over the speed bumps, and because he didn't understand the concept of a speed bump, he was very concerned that his mommy was "hitting the squirrels".
5.) Avery noticed that the large flag on the flagpole wasn't waving. I told him that it needed the wind to blow in order to wave. It wasn't waving because it wasn't windy. Avery simply said that it needed "new batteries" because "it not working".
We love the way his little mind works. : )

Preserving Funny Memories
I figured the blog was a good place to store funny little sayings that Avery comes up with. Hopefully we can look back at the posts and be reminded of cute memories we have about our son. Everyone seems to tell you when you first have a child that time will fly by so fast and to cherish each moment. Well, this is my attempt to cherish and preserve moments.
Our family went to the mall yesterday, and Clint took Avery into the men's restroom to do some business. The stall next to them was occupied. After Avery's successful attempt at the potty, Avery heard that their neighboring stall was "successful" as well. He exclaimed "Oooh! He go pee pee in the potty TOO!". Although a little embarrassed, we were very happy that at least he went.
To save time, we ate in the food court. Most kids like some of the fast food staples like nuggets or fries. Our son, being a unique individual, will barely eat those let alone home cooked food. However, of all things, he really enjoys prunes.
After the mall, we hung out at Barnes and Noble. There is a children's area that has a Thomas train track set up for kiddos to play with. At first, Avery was the only child in the area. Then, a mother of two little ones strolled up to the train track table. Avery was so ecstatic with joy to see potential playmates that he immediately ran up to the little boy and peppered him with questions. "Hi!! How are you?! I'm Avery!! What you doin'?!" etc... Once the boy warmed up to Avery he was fine and no longer scared, but it is funny to us how social Avery is for his age.
On the drive to the mall and the way back home, Avery talked nonstop - mostly entertaining himself. Clint and I just played the radio to drown him out a bit so that we could converse. On the way back, with our eyes glazed over in an attempt to be patient with our son and let him talk, Avery was trying to get our attention by saying various things "hurt". "My head hurt. My knee hurt. My eye hurt. My LUNG HURT!" He obviously heard that word in a book we recently read to him and has no idea what a lung is. It was humorous to us, however.
We took the nicer of the two cars that we own on our trip. The other car is an old 1996 red Toyota Tercel (runs great and is paid off, but nothing pretty to look at). However, in Avery's eyes, the car is "fast!" because he thinks it's our "Lightning McQueen" car.
Other "Avery-isms":
"Little help! Little help!"
"Make an Avery house!" - Clint and I will hug, standing up, and Avery crawls under in between
"I want a blue mermaid" - pink lemonade in his blue Mickey sippy cup
"truckcars" - SUV's & minivans
"Wake up it's Christmas!" - saying used to wake his parents up from sleep

The Artist Within
I love to watch Avery in focused play. Such is the case when he is outside "painting" with his sidewalk chalk. He quickly uses his whole range of motion making broad strokes, giving sounds to different marks and colors, and narrates his drawings into stories. There will be a point where he backs up to view the piece at a distance, and then move back in to hone in details with quick marks. Sometimes he invites me to add a character, but tells me what and where it should be.
When something really interests him, Avery passionately makes an attempt to discover it - and master it until he is satisfied with the result. Otherwise, he becomes so frustrated that exasperates him enough to take a break from it. I wondered if these moments give me a glimpse of his budding personality and clue me in on how I can help guide his strengths and areas of weakness.
