The day before his birthday, Avery requested to decorate his own cake. He picked out fudge frosting and helped ice
it, but we had to remind him not to lick the knife and dip it back into the
icing or else it spread germs. He gladly
licked the knife and any spare frosting left splattered on the table after he
was finished. Next, I showed him how to
pour out sprinkles, a little at a time on a plate, and then how to use his
pincher fingers to pick up sprinkles and gently scatter them around the
cake. He proceeded to have fun making “piles”
of the sprinkles on the cake in various sections. It was decorated “Avery style”.
We also made rice crispie treats that same afternoon for his
class snack the next day. Later, he
shared how happy he was that his class liked the treats he brought.
The morning of his birthday, he woke up and found the
bathroom mirror had a birthday message and drawings of decorations (drawn with
a dry erase marker). Since he is
beginning to read, he really thought it was great he could sound out what the
message said.
For breakfast, we got him his own bottle of chocolate
milk (normally only an occasional treat if we happen to eat out). He drank a little of it for
breakfast, lunch and even saved some for dinner. The dinner table sits in front of a bay
window, which we had decorated with balloons and a birthday banner. The cheerful decorations helped cheer his
morning, especially since it was the first day back to school after having a
long Christmas break and then some unexpected snow days.
Before school, he got to wear a special birthday
sticker. We let Aileen have a sticker
too so she could share in the fun.
That evening, we had a special birthday dinner for Avery as
a family. Avery planned in advance that
he wanted for us to fix Alfredo noodles – which he ate heartily. We enjoyed watching him open his gift from us
and listening to Clint read his birthday cards from relatives.
After singing happy birthday to him with the lights off and candles lit on
the cake, he easily blew all them out so that we could enjoy the chocolate cake
with fudge frosting and sprinkle piles.
Aileen enjoyed her piece of cake too, picking at it at first since she
could not figure out how to eat it without getting her fingers messy. She finally decided the fork was not worth the
effort, so she dived right in. Avery was
in heaven licking off all the icing. He
left the cake part mostly uneaten, however.
The rest of the night was filled with the kids running
around the house shooting each other with toy guns and light sabers while the
parents cleaned everything up. Happy sixth
birthday to our Avery!
